A generic model for the formulation of growing media from composts and quarry fines

(MA/3/1/003)

The aim of the project is to produce a generic procedure to support the commercial production and marketing of potential novel growing media, and to pilot the procedure at a compost blending facility. The proposal builds in experience gained by Mineral Solutions Ltd. in privately funded trials on the cultivation of Alstroemeria in novel growing media, and from an earlier MIST project (Combination of basaltic quarry fines with organic process residues for the development of novel growing media (MA/1/3/003)). The project assesses a range of sources of compost and quarry fines to develop a model that can be applied generically throughout the UK and overseas. Targeted markets include mainly gardening and horticultural sectors, and potentially sylviculture, agricultural production and land restoration.
