Mineralogical Analysis of Fluorescent Tubes

On behalf of the National Centre for Business Sustainability, Mineral Solutions determined the environmental risks associated with the utilisation of recycled fluorescent tubes. Initial characterisation proved that residual heavy metal contamination was present on the inner surfaces of the recycled tubes. The contaminant of primary concern proved to be mercury. Leach tests were carried out on the recycled glass to determine the availability of contaminants and the risk of leaching into the environment.

Following the results of experiments designed by Mineral Solutions it was determined that the complete removal of mercury, from recycled fluorescent tubes, was possible and would be achievable/cost effective on a bulk scale.
