Microbial Characterisation

Working on a project for a major client within the energy sector we determined the complexity of the microbial community within anoxic sediments, focusing on bacteria that had the potential to control the mobility of metals and radionuclides. Further to this experiments were designed to identity the dominant sulphate-reducing bacteria present, and quantify their numbers. Methodologies employed included traditional cultivation-dependent approaches, in combination with powerful PCR-based molecular techniques that targeted genetic markers, including highly conserved 16S rRNA genes, and functional genes required for sulphate reduction.
